The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) and the Transportation Construction Coalition (TCC) hosted an exclusive national event, The Interstate Highway System – Fifty Years and Looking Forward. This historic forum was held in Washington, D.C. on June 28 and 29, 2006 in conjunction with a number of special events organized to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Dwight D. Eisenhower National System of Interstate and Defense Highways.

The objective for the policy forum was to bring together well-respected federal, state and industry leaders and experts to recognize the contribution of the Interstate to our nation's economic and cultural fabric, and to focus their collective wisdom on a vision for the Interstate's next fifty years. The forum was limited to 125 participants to order to foster the most productive dialogue in both plenary sessions and small group discussions.

The forum began with lunch at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 28, 2006, and concluded at noon on Thursday, June 29th when forum participants proceeded to a ceremonial gathering and luncheon two blocks away. This ceremony was the culmination of the AASHTO-sponsored Interstate cross-country convoy commemorating Eisenhower's 1919 trek across the continent.
